Coaching requirements

Certified teachers (not necessarily at ACS) must have:

  • Current CPR/AED certification (consult this list as the course titles must match exactly)  

  • Current First Aid certification (consult this list as the course titles must match exactly)

  • Concussion course: free course through NFHS (link) that must be renewed every two years. Once you finish, please send the certificate digitally to Mr. Partell. Choose New York State and click Order Course. Sign-in (if you haven’t used NFHS before, you will have to create a free account).

  • Coaching Courses: You are required to complete coaching courses to finish your coaching certification. The first requirement is due within two years of your coaching start date. The remainder are due within five years of your coaching start date. Please click the link to the left to learn more about coaching courses. Within two years of coaching, you must complete: Philosophy, Principles, and Organization of Athletics in Education. Within five years of coaching, you must complete: Health Sciences Applied to Coaching AND Theory & Techniques of Coaching. If you begin coaching a second sport, you have one year from the date of that appointment to complete part II of Theory and Techniques in the second sport. NOTE: There is a "Second Pathway" option that was created by NYS a few years back. Click the link to the left to learn more and/or reach out to Mr. Partell.

NOTE: If you are a phys ed certified teacher, you do not have to take the coaching courses (#4 and #5). 

 

Non-certified-teachers must have:

  • All of the requirements a certified teacher needs (#1-5 above).

  • Fingerprinting clearance: must be through N.Y. State Education Department, options: Fingerprinting option through IdentoGO or contact Joette Cappello @ 716-687-2304

  • CAI (Child Abuse Identification) workshop: CAI from NYS (you will submit the completion certificate)  

  • SAVE (Schools Against Violence in Education) workshop: SAVE from GST BOCESSAVE from NYSED (you will submit the completion certificate)

  • Dignity for all Students Act (DASA) training: BOCES DASA Training, Daemen DASA training (provider must upload this to TEACH)

  • NYS Coaching License in TEACH - You must obtain a Coaching license from NYS by applying on-line through the NYSED TEACH system. This will cost you a $50 money order or credit card payment. There is a one-page direction sheet below. This is renewed annually. Please ensure that you choose Erie 1 BOCES as your processor. If you do not, your application will be sent to Albany and will likely take longer to process.

NOTE: If a non-teacher coach has completed these requirements and coached for a minimum of three years, they may apply for a professional coaching license that is renewable every three years.
